Peanut Gallery is pleased to present “Photoplay 4” a new body of work by Raffa Reuther.
There is no elevator speech.
*A neologism I created to situate my practice in a nest of supportive language;
PHOTO: an instrument that allows the multiplicity of being to be seen through images of light, motion, and energy
PLAY: a collective exploration in a surreal space over a specific interval of time, where the connection to emotions, knowledge, and games is expanded through the performance of curiosity, interpreted through abstract, scientific scores
I suppose you would like a taste?
what John Cage called “the big question,” namely, “What are you going to do with your time?”
“The scientific principle of parsimony, that the simplest theory is the best, will seldom work where human nature is concerned.”
“How can you pilot a spacecraft if you can’t find your way around your own apartment?”
“Some bodies are never at home, some bodies cannot simply cross from A to B, some bodies recognize and live with the inherent instability of identity
“All these systems of performative transformations also include incomplete, unbalanced transformations of time and space: doing a specific “there and then” in this particular “here and now” in such a way that all four dimensions are kept in play.”
Most of the exercises are based on my own cowardice
a color palette that fell in that strange range between nauseating and a rather serious kind of drama
*that smattering of scores includes excerpts from Female Masculinity (Judith Halberstam), The Discipline of DE (William S. Burroughs), Leap Before You Look: Black Mountain College (Helen Molesworth), Performance Theory (Richard Schechner), as well as writing of my own. The unabridged book of scores is open for perusing in the gallery
A fibrous installation complete with a stage, costumes, oversized toys, a snippet of VHS, photo zines, a book of scores, and low-cost opportunities to support the artist and gallery.
THE FOLLOWING ACTIONS ARE NOT PROHIBITED:
touching, listening, playing, building, examining, observing, arranging, perusing, performing, and most other mannerisms excluding those that are destructive or harmful to others.
Ideally you might stop by on a rainy gray Chicago evening and curl up in the arm chair with a cup of tea and try to figure out what happened and why you wish you were there.
